How It Started

I’ve been in the field of commercial real estate since 1993, when I went to work for a publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT) called IRT Property Company as the lease administrator. A year or so later, I moved into the legal department to draft and negotiate leases—and realized I’d found one of my life’s passions. I know it sounds weird, but I love contracts!

Educational Leadership & Global Experience

After completing my master’s degree, I left IRT and worked for a corporate real estate membership association called CoreNet Global. I was in charge of creating educational content for five global conferences. That was a fun job! I’ve always loved traveling, and this role gave me the opportunity to become exposed to many different cultures and ways of doing things. It was a great experience that has deeply informed my worldview.

Entrepreneurial Growth

I eventually became a casualty of a corporate reorganization and found myself self-employed. This was a scary time—but also one of great personal growth and learning. I started three companies, both on my own and with others. One of them is still around today!

Return to Leasing

When self-employment no longer fit my family’s needs, I returned to my first love: commercial real estate. I joined Watkins Real Estate Group, a commercial retail shopping center developer, and it became my professional home for more than nine years. During my time there, I drafted and negotiated shopping center leases on behalf of WREG—most often negotiating directly with attorneys representing tenants on the other side.

The decision to strike out on my own again was made gradually, but ultimately, it was about choosing the life I want. I love being able to focus on one area of expertise—retail lease negotiation—and use the knowledge and skills I’ve built over the years to help people who, like me, own small businesses. And honestly? I love being my own
